Lumbricals muscle :-
Muscle details :-
there are four of them , numbered fron medial to lateral side .
they arise from the tendons of the flexor digitorum longus . the first lumbrical is unipennate and the other are bipennate .
their tendons pass forward on the metatarsophalangeal joint of the lateral four toes and then dorsally for insertion into the extensor expansion .
Nerve supply :-
the first muscle by the medial planter nerve and the other three by the lateral planter nerve .
they maintain extension of the digits at the interphalangeal joints while the tendons of the flexor digitorum longus are flexing the toes so that in walking and running the toes do not buckle under .
