Longissimus capitis muscle:
Longissimus capitis muscle:
the muscle lateral to the semispinalis muscles. It is the longest subdivision of the erector spinae muscles that extends forward into the transverse processes of the posterior cervical vertebrae.
origin:
The transverse processes are bony projections that stick out diagonally from the back of the vertebrae, while the articular processes are bony projections that stick out from the top and bottom of vertebrae.
Insertion:
Additionally, the three separate muscles of the longissimus have their own insertion points as well.
Nerve :
posterior branch of spinal nerve .
Actions :
Laterally: Flex the head and neck to the same side. Bilaterally: Extend the vertebral column.
Neck extension: bending the neck backwards.
Lateral neck flexion: bending the neck to each side, such as when you tilt your head to one side of the body .
Back extension: bending the back backwards, such as when you perform a slight back bend
Lateral back flexion: bending the back to either side, such as when you bend over to your right to stretch out your left side
