Burpee Exercise

Introduction

The burpee exercise is a full-body workout that combines strength, cardio, and endurance in one powerful movement. It engages multiple muscle groups at once, helps burn calories efficiently, and improves overall fitness, agility, and coordination.

Burpees are a sequence of exercises that include a leap, a squat, a plank, and a push-up. The burpee helps burn calories and fat, enhances cardiovascular health, and exercises the entire body by combining these distinct motions in the right order and with the right form.

How to do the Burpee exercise?

  • Position: Standing position.
  • With your feet shoulder-width apart, your back straight, and your knees bent, begin in a squat position.
  • On the ground in front of you, place your hands right inside your feet.
  • Kick your feet back until you are on your hands and toes in a push-up position, keeping your weight on your hands.
  • Keep your body straight from head to heels and execute one push-up. Don’t let your back droop or raise your butt too high.
  • Leap back to your starting posture with your feet to execute a frog kick.
  • Reach your arms above your head while standing.
  • Jump swiftly into the air to return to your starting point.
  • After landing with your knees bent, squat down and perform another repetition.

Box jump burpee

  • Position: Standing position.
  • Place your hands on the box or bench and perform a modified pushup while standing in front of the box in your typical squat position, rather than lowering yourself to the floor for a pushup.
  • Then, leap up on the box rather than into the air.
  • With your knees bent, softly land on the floor and proceed directly to the next repetition.
  • Ten to fifteen repetitions per session are recommended.
  • Hold duration: 5 seconds is enough.

Dumbbell Burpee

  • Position: Prone lying position.
  • Holding a five-pound dumbbell in each hand, begin in a squat stance.
  • Rather than leaping to your feet, raise both dumbbells above your head while standing.
  • Return to the starting position after lowering the weights to your side.
  • You can jump while holding the dumbbells for an even more difficult task, but only if you can manage the weights with ease.
  • Ten to fifteen repetitions per session are recommended.
  • Hold duration: 5 seconds is enough.

One-leg burpee

  • Position: Standing position.
  • To begin, stand on one foot.
  • Place both hands on the ground in front of your foot while bending your standing knee.
  • Kick your feet out behind you while maintaining straight arms, landing in a one-legged plank while bracing your core.
  • Lean with the same foot back in the direction of your hands.
  • At the peak of the exercise, stand on one foot and leap vertically.
  • After completing all the necessary repetitions on one foot, move on to the other leg.

Burpee with Bosu ball

  • Position: Prone lying position.
  • Start in a squat position with your knees bent while holding the outside edges of the Bosu ball.
  • Hold the Bosu ball.
  • Lower your hands to the ground.
  • While performing a push-up, place the Bosu ball immediately underneath you and place your hands on the level surface.
  • Then, while standing upright, grasp the Bosu ball’s opposing edges and raise it above your head. Repeat after lowering it to the ground.
  • Ten to fifteen repetitions per session are recommended.
  • Hold duration: 5 seconds is enough.

How to simplify it

You can reduce the intensity of a regular burpee if it seems too difficult at first. If you’re new to burpees, try these variations:

  • Jump instead of doing a pushup: Perform a squat thrust first. It begins similarly to a burpee, but instead of performing a pushup and then jumping up, you just start in a squat, kick your legs back into a pushup position, and then go back to your starting position.
  • Don’t make the jump: After the pushup, simply return to the squat position rather than leaping into the air.
  • Don’t do the pushup: Instead of performing a pushup, hold a plank position for a few seconds if your shoulders or chest muscles aren’t prepared. Another option is to perform a partial pushup until your strength increases.

Benefits of burpee exercises

  • Burns calories: The average person can perform 20 burpees in a minute. The number of calories you can burn by performing burpees continuously for a minute is displayed in the table below.
  • Full body workout: Burpees are an exercise for callisthenics. In other words, they use the weight of your body as resistance. The goal of burpees is to develop muscle strength and endurance in both your upper and lower body through a full-body callisthenics workout. The muscles in your legs, hips, buttocks, belly, arms, chest, and shoulders can all be strengthened with a typical burpee exercise.
  • Easy and adaptable: Burpees don’t require any equipment. To manoeuvre, all you need is your own body weight and sufficient room. Therefore, you can still get your heart rate up by performing burpees even if you’re in a little office, hotel room, or apartment. It’s simple to add weights or an additional push-up or jump to the traditional burpee if you desire variation.
  • Your posture, balance, and mobility will all improve: Burpees can enhance your mobility, balance, and coordination since they use a variety of muscles and include a broad range of motion. Regular burpees will strengthen your body, enhance your health, and make you feel and move better.

It might be time to undertake an HIIT exercise regimen if you’re hesitant to start doing burpees because you might need an enjoyable technique to motivate yourself. High-intensity interval training, or HIIT, allows you to alternate between different strength- and fitness-building activities at different intensities to avoid boredom.
