Palmaris brevis Muscle Anatomy
Palmaris Brevis is a thin, quadrilateral muscle, placed beneath the integument of the ulnar side of the hand. It acts to fold the skin of the hypothenar eminence transversally.
Origin:
It originates from the flexor retinaculum (medial) and palmar aponeurosis.
Insertion:
It inserts into the skin of palm on medial side.
Nerve supply:
It is supplied by the superficial branch of ulnar nerve.
Blood supply:
It is supplied by Palmar metacarpal artery.
Action:
It pulls the skin over hypothenar eminence, deepening the cup of the palm and so improving grip.
Function:
The palmaris brevis muscle tightens the palmar aponeurosis while contracting, which wrinkles the hypothenar skin and deepens the palmar fossa while holding a grip. This action helps to position and stabilize the palm during a spherical power grip, where it is necessary to pose the hand in a cup-formation, or during repetitive grip movements.
Palmaris brevis Strengthening exercise:
Palmaris brevis Stretching exercise:
Standing or sitting, extend the arm in front of you and with a fully extended or locked out elbow, take the wrist into extension and use the other hand to pull the wrist towards you to increase the stretch (Palmaris Longus). Using the other hand pull on the fingers to include a stretch for the Flexor Digitorum Superficialis & Profundus.
Clinical relevance:
The innervation of the Palmaris Brevis is by the only motor component of the superficial branch of the ulnar nerve. This is makes it possible to diagnose the site of lesions to the ulnar nerve at the wrist, based on whether palmaris brevis function is affected or not. It may also help to protect the ulnar nerve and ulnar artery from compression in the ulnar canal during repetitive grasping motions.
FAQs
A tiny muscle with a variety of morphologies that arises from the palmar aponeurosis and inserts into the skin and fascia of the medial palm is known as the palmaris brevis (PB). The ulnar nerve’s superficial branch’s sole motor part exclusively innervates the PB.
During a grasp movement, the palmaris brevis muscle tenses the skin of the palm on the ulnar side. Additionally, it makes the palm’s hollow deeper. The ulnar nerve and ulnar artery may be shielded by the palmaris brevis during repeated gripping movements.
Hand
The palmaris brevis is a little quadrangular muscle located in the hand’s hypothenar area. Despite being in this area, the palmaris brevis is not a member of the hypothenar muscle group; rather, it is regarded as a standout superficial muscle in this area.
Numbness or paresthesias within the sensory distribution of the superficial branch of the ulnar nerve are reported by a few patients with palmaris brevis syndrome. Numerous people complain of pain near the hypothenar eminence.
Place a soft but hard hand workout ball comfortably into your hand’s palm and encircle it with all of your fingers. Holding this position for a few seconds, squeeze the ball as firmly as you can before relaxing.
Do 10 to 15 times with each hand, two or three times per week, repeat this motion.
