Vertical Muscle Anatomy
- The vertical muscle is an intrinsic muscle of the tongue.
- Its fibers extend from the upper to the under the surface of the organ and It is found only at the borders of the forepart of the tongue
Gross anatomy:
- The muscle fibers attach proximally to the submucosal fibrous layer of the dorsum of the tongue and attach distally to the inferior surface of the apex and lateral tongue margins
Origin
- The submucosal fibrous layer of the dorsum of the tongue.
Insertion
- Inferior surface borders of the tongue.
Nerve supply
- Hypoglossal Nerve
Blood supply
- Lingual Artery
Actions
- Flattens and broadens the tongue.
- The tongue flattens, expands, and elongates when the vertical muscle contracts.
